The Shamrock Run road race raises money for the local community. Over the years it has raised over $120,000. The ICRC was asked to lend a hand with the communication needs while CERT handled traffic/crowd control. 8 ICRC members: KA1NDE, KB1KZC, KB1RRS, KB1SNL, KB1WEW, KB1YNE, KB1YYG, and N1JGR showed up for this Saturday morning event. Included activities were covering intersections and parking locations for safety, taking care of net control, shadowing key people, and providing communications from a chase vehicle. It was a great opportunity to get out there, help out, learn a couple things, contribute knowledge and just plain have a great time. Event webpage: http://bristolct.net/roadraces/ShamrockRun.aspx

Newington Amateur Radio League (NARL) put out a call for assistance when they were asked to provide communication coverage at this Hartford parade honoring our nation’s veterans. It is the largest veteran’s parade in New England and this was the 14th year in a row it has been held. ICRC thought this would be a great event to attend and a wonderful way to honor our vets so Al N1JWF, Rick N1JGR, Nick KB1SNL, Chris KA1NDE, Chris KB1YNE, and someone who recently passed their exam at one of ICRC’s exam sessions who joined us for their first event, Chris KC1AFT all responded to the call and showed up. A couple of local CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) and Emergency Management Directors from nearby communities also enjoyed the day and had a chance to play with their radios. The weather was slightly chilly but the sun was out and this was a great opportunity for various radio groups to get to know each other while working together for a great cause.
